"Still
Life". The literal translation from english to italian is "vita
ferma", but usually "still life" is translated as
"dead nature". There's a big difference between "still"
and "dead". This surpised us, and gave us the idea to
give voice to the passage from still/alive to dead, by sacrificing
five oranges.
At first, we just thought we would plug in the five
oranges as if they were a normal electronic device, (and consequentially
to sacrifice their integrity). Assign each one a mixer channel,
eq, pan, and volume, and use two contact microphones on the table,
and another on the oranges, to increase the spatial values. The
resulting sound is almost the same as the one you get when touching
a connected jack with your hands. So we started touching and playing
the oranges.
But then we chose to let them talk for a couple of
minutes - by turning up the volume, and acting as the moderators
of their talk, using the mixer. It was exciting to listen to the
harmonic feedback we got at maximum volume. The results can be heard
in the mp3 version. The track on the cd is our musical translation
of the orange's communications, during their passage from "still
and alive nature", to "dead nature". A melancholic
and happy goodbye at the same time. Happy to be able to convert
their energy in sound.
