my piece (bookshelf...) comes out of the idea of two aspects of the meaning of still life. first it is a simple arrangement of objects (books on my shelf), and second it is a moment in time (the 'field recording', where you can hear the sound of 2 + minutes of my studio, complete with my sipping hot tea, typing on the computer, accidentally kicking over a can with pens, etc.). the sounds used to create the work come from both the audio aspect of the still life, or moment – samples of the field recording – as well as the visual element of the image - where i used my voice to sing a 'libretto' based on the titles of the books that are visible in the still life photo – the vocal consists of singing simple 'words' made up from the letters of the title of each book such as 'tmos' which = the myth of sisyphus... the audio still life will hopefully exist as a 3 minute 're-still life' – as it is now a series of new moments and new arrangements of objects... it is also worth mentioning that like a photo or a painting or a grouping of objects, that one can't avoid the input or impact of those swirling things that surround the objects of attention – things like weather, light, mood, events, etc. – in terms of my own piece, the final work is more a result of these things than simply the objects at hand – the still life is a vehicle for all of my interests and focus to shift through – this is as much a result of the influence of the events and emotions of march 2003 as it about my room and the books on my shelf...
